Outdoor Kitchen Garden Design Design-Hello and welcome to Successful Garden Design show, I am your host Rachel Mathews and in this week’s episode we are going to be doing our very first quick sketch challenge where. I’ll be working on a viewer’s garden and I’ll be seeing how many design ideas I can come up with in ten minutes or less. And afterwards I am going to give you the answer to last week’s question where I asked you what it was that I didn’t focus on that you think I probably would when we discussed the California design.
Ok, so this is today’s. quick sketch challenge garden, it’s Dawn’s garden and she’s in the UK and she’s just had this conservatory added to the house and her old patio is tucked around the corner. here. And she basically wants a new area that links and comes right the way across. So she wants to do a lot of entertaining. She doesn’t want a big lawn. We don’t have an exact. budget for this, but the starting budget is about three thousand pounds. Now that would be great if we were just reshaping the lawn and putting planting in, but it is going to be a struggle with the size patio that she wants. Now she does have a lot of existing. paving and some bricks, which we might be able to reuse so that would cut down cost. dramatically, but its difficult to see at the moment from the photograph, what condition. the existing paving is in. Anyway, I’ll come up with some shapes and see what I can do
And then we can look at ways of doing things for different budgets. So I am going to set the timer for ten minutes so we laid it out a bit so I’ll just pause while I’m thinking. Cause that’s going to be as exciting as what you paint or otherwise, so anyway. if we see what we can come up with in ten minutes. Oh right, go. Ok so she’s already. said she likes sort of curved shapes, so I am just going to bring in the curve there,. and that one. So, I am just sort of seeing how I divide the space up a little bit. and I got this kind of area here and we got the conservatory doors here and the kitchen door. here as well.
Now that is a really big patio. I mean she did say she wanted a maybe patio or deck combination. So that’s six meters, maybe five. I am just looking at the proportions of this, is that going to be a little too massive? So I am going to get the size that. I think is right first, then worry about budget later. I fin-d if you sort of give yourself. too many problems in one hit it, it makes it very difficult.
You end up stopping yourself and you interrupt the process. So it’s better to just do get it out of your system, whatever. sort of ideas are coming and then sort of tweak it to fit of a later date. So that’s not a bad size patio. so by the time you’ve got sort of table and chairs,. there you go sort of chair front and umbrella. It’s amazing how quickly you can use the. space up so. Now as you said that could be decking or it could be paving, so it’ll. be an undefined area of hard landscaping for time being we can figure out the details of. it at a later date. So then, so she doesn’t want a particularly big lawn. She wants it. nice and low-maintenance. So I put in a circle of lawn here and she has a whole lot of brick. left so maybe we can have a nice brick edge around that and the patio area. And then this. area, that could be sort of a, sort of a gravel area, or maybe a gravel border or something.
what you want to do is have about approximately a quarter planting, a quarter to a third planting. and the rest empty space. And that sort of it about right and I know we got some couple. of big bushes here but so you got a big shrub there but I don’t know how good a condition that’s in, but. I think it would be nice to have something to draw the eye to the garden. And when you’re. in the conservatory here, something to look at. So either a bench or a statue or maybe. a sculpture, cause it would look really nice in that corner. So let’s just make that. a bit smaller. Ok so before I go too much further, I just want to think about the space and how we are using it and the plant.
Have I made the best use of space? So from, you’ve got a kitchen window here and a kitchen door. Be nice if we had a focal point. This willow. tree she said it’s optional she said she quite like to keep it but if not it wouldn’t. be the end of the world. So I am just thinking whether I put in some plants in here and have. this as a curved path coming through. So we’re kind of drawing the eyes up and around. So. from here when you look out, there is a view to something sort of going of, but then we. come into the lawn and it would be, could look a bit- which is having stepping stones. through the lawn might not look that good. So, I don’t think there is room to take. it round to here which would be my main, first option.
There might be, you know- got a little. bit of an idea forming. I mean if we move this lawn down, we might then just about have room to have another sweeping curve coming in. And then we could have a stepping stone. path all the way to gazebo, or sitting area, or something. And we’ve then got some nice ,. we could put some nice planting in here and all around here. So that path would be framed. there somewhere. When you’re sitting in the conservatory, when you’re here, your eye have got something to follow around as well as look directly across. And the more your visual journey, even if you’ve never used this path ever the fact is it’s there. visually, and your eyes follow. It’s like having a story.
Not being able to see the entire garden in one go and just having somewhere where the path goes off and you’re oh I wonder where that goes. It just mentally makes the garden a lot more interesting, if you can take yourself one a visual journey. So I’ve got the path there. Ok, so planting. So you can guarantee the radius point of this curve path here is bound to be in the house. Cause it would be nice if we could, I bet it’s here. Yeah pretty much. So if we could have one that goes outside the conservatory, that would make it a lot easier to be built. And then do the rest freehand. And that can be measured off the conservatory there.
So. I probably need that to come up more, so I am going to have to change that radius around. Anyway let’s get the lawn. Now I think it would be good if we have a brick age in because. that would just keep it nice and neat. It’s good for several reasons, because it allows. the plant just to flop over the bricks and then they don’t damage the lawn, but also. you never have to edge this lawn. And you’re not going to end up with an odd shape every. time you’ve edged it. So brick paving is very good, and we do have a nice big pile. of bricks that we can use. Oh time up. Right. So I am just going to carry on for a few minutes,. neatening this up. So you can see exactly what it is I am trying to do. And then we. can discuss the cost of this and budget, etc. So I’ll come back once I’ve neatened it up. up.
Ok, so I’ve tried to neaten up my very messy rough draft a little bit. So hopefully. it makes a bit more sense. So we’ve got the patio, deck area wrapping around the conservatory. Quite a small sized lawn, cause she didn’t want a big lawn. And then you’ve got a stepping. stone path leading around to a sitting area or focal point of some description over there. And then we’ve got a nice amount of planting here, and here and around here.
But not so. much there’s going to be masses of maintenance. And the gravel could be, would be on a weed. suppressant membrane and you could do an edge of either metal or timber or not have an edge. at all. It could just go up to the planting here. So there’s plenty of room to get lots of. color and make it look very, very pretty. But still have an interest in the fact that this path,. this little border here, although it’s small it just adds a little bit of interest because. when you’re here you can’t quite see everything in one go. And the brick edging that just. keeps everything neat and tidy- and it gives sort of bit of structure to the garden.
Now. as far as budget goes, the budget of three thousand isn’t going to go very far with. the hard landscaping. It would do this area quite easily enough. So if the patio was existing. in this shape, that would be fine. Hard landscaping is always where all the money disappears. It’s a lot more expensive then I think a lot of people realize. So there approximately. 50 square meters here and if you had sort of reasonably nice paving, you’re probably. looking at about 20 pounds of square meter, so that’s a thousand pounds gone on materials. alone.
When you think six hundred pounds or three thousand pound budget, it’s going. to go straight to the tax man, that doesn’t really leave you with a lot for the labor. and we haven’t even factored in the sand the cement and hard core to build this yet. So now it’s been quite a few years since I’ve been doing the quote side of the business,. but it alway used to be about 100 pound of square meter for laying paving. It’s probably. gone up, but you know I think for a patio of this size and of this nature you’d be. looking at at least five or six thousand pounds for that. And then add on the plants and. the rest of it here.
So you know landscaping isn’t cheap, but at the same time if you. think about purchasing a car, that devalues money instantly. At least whatever you spend. on the landscaping, whilst it doesn’t increase the value of your property, you don’t lose. money on landscaping. And if you got a garden that’s already done, it’s an added selling. point to future purchasers, oh the garden is done. And if you’ve done a good job with. it, you know you won’t lose money landscaping your garden. So if you know the three thousand. budget was set in stone, what would we do differently? Well, the main thing would be. to reduce this patio here.
Maybe pull it in so it ends here. I don’t often you’re. likely to use that area that the conservatory is there. So that could be dead space. So. you could just move this radius point that I’ve got here. If it came over a bit and. the and it ended here or here, so if it came in and around and then this area was gravel. and this all carried the planting on a little bit further, that would certainly reduce the. cost. Now if you are able to use the materials or you are able to build it yourself, then. yes of course that does cut down on the cost of things.
Now looking at the photograph here,. the bricks you’ve got, they look like soft reds to me. So I would not use those for the. brick edge. I mean yes you can turn them on their side and they will be a little bit tougher,. but you really would do better with clay pavers that are meant to be laid on the ground. Usually. soft reds are like the name sounds, they are far too soft and they will just brake off. in pieces and with all the cost of the sand and cement and the labor to get it in place,. you’ll do better you know getting the right paving in.
But if they’re tougher bricks,. you can get away with turning them on their side and concreting them in, but take advice. on that. Another thing, if you can reuse the existing paving, the majority of that again. that’s going to save you great deal of money. So there you go Dawn. I hope I’ve given you. some good ideas. Now this does need to some more time spent on it. It was just the rough. draft, but hopefully that’s what points you in the right direction. And so that we. can get a better idea of how it looks, how it’s going to look from the house, I am. just going to see if we could so something clever with the camera and drop down a bit. so that we can get a sort of a perspective view of it. Ok so coming down this level,. you can sort of get a feel for how the shapes work. You can see how the curve of the patio. there kind of draws the eye along this curved path. We naturally sort of follow that around and. then as we move over here. You can see that circle. Although it’s quite a small lawn. in proportion to the whole garden, it does have the sort of made that little space look bigger.
Having this sitting area up further just draws the eye a little bit more, so there’s plenty to be looking. at from the house that draws the eye and makes the garden look more interesting. So I hope. that’s given you plenty of ideas for your garden. Now onto our quiz that we had last. week. Did you get what it was that I didn’t discuss that much. Well the answer was planting. I hardly mentioned the plants. Out of all the discussion on the design, plants only. got like a very brief mention. Now why was that? Well the reason is because plants are. the finishing touch to a good garden they are not the starting point.
Now I know that is sort. of counterintuitive to everything you’ve probably ever read in gardening books and. seeing on the television. Everybody focuses in on plants, but they really are the finishing. touch and that’s something that I am going to demonstrate more, and more over the series. But we are going to focus on planting just not right now. As the season progresses, I’ll. show you how to put together a good planting plan. But for the time being, I just want. to focus our efforts on design because that is the really, really important part. As I. hope that you’ve learned a little bit from today’s show. So thank you very much for. all of you that left your answers in the question of last week’s episode. Now I’ve been. very impressed by the sheer number of you that got the answer right.
So well done, everybody. So I’ll draw a winner very shortly and I will contact the lucky winner by e-mail. So. I hope you enjoyed this episode, do please share it with all your friends. And you can. subscribe to it by iTunes or on my YouTube channel. There will all the links to everything. we’ve discussed in today’s how on the show notes which can be found on SuccessfulGardenDesign.com/show2. Now in the next episode, I have a slightly controversial garden to bring you. It’s. for a client of mine in Singapore, who has a property in Malaysia and she wanted a design. that really, really modern but also that would 60% would produce food. Now in Malaysia they. do gardens in a very set way and I’ve broken pretty much every single rule they have. So. I’ve been! I look forward to seeing you then. Take care.
