Mike Makes a Butcher Block Kitchen Island
HELLO,we are going to be making a kitchen island table for her out of an old piece of butcher block that we found in my parent’s garage got some poop on it and got the corner missing here
So while Jackie starts the planing I am going to cut this to the right size and get it cleaned up I had my broom leaning up against the wall at a slight angle and the heat and humidity curved the wood this drastically so that is what
We’re working with in the shop this week all right I’ve got the top cut to length .I’m gonna let Jackie sand it and I’m gonna get started on gluing up our legs because we want 4×4 posts for each corner we’re going to be using pocket holes for the apron joinery so Jackie’s going to work on that and I’m going to finish up the legs cut them to their final length
Well I think I screwed up this should be 22 so I think I only subtracted one leg from this cut yeah .so, I’m have to cut these down and Jackie’s gonna have to redraw the pocket hole
I’m like I know this is coming out I added this little skirt here I wish I
had cut this deeper because initially I was gonna put those rails on top I think they would look nice but now it kind of doesn’t fit but I well let’s glue it.

I built a just simple drawer by ripping a 2×4 and a half on the bandsaw all I had for the bottom was masonite so I supported that underneath with some strips now I’m going to cut a hole in the actual island and it’s going to be on both sides so that the drawer can just slide either way all the way through change of plans I am NOT skilled enough with the jigsaw to make two perfectly square holes opposing each other so I’m going to cut down this drawer and put a nice 2×6 face on it .
okay, I want to put some casters on the feet but I want to recess them down into the leg just a little bit
I’m going to take my Forstner bit drill a hole and then drop these in just a little bit ,where they have just enough room to swivel okay here it is before stain got the just crude track mechanism just wood tracks for the drawer at the wheels on get the drawer over here it’s already been stained and we’ve got all of our shelf pieces here I used our mineral oil and beeswax finish on this and it came out amazing it’s becoming one of myfavorite finishes at least for food safe stuff last thing to do is attach the top and I’ve got some small L brackets that
I’m just going to screw from underneath things I like the beeswax finish is amazing it feels really really soft to the touch what I did first was cover it in mineral oil just straight mineral oil.because I was looking at butcher block conditioner and that’s just a hundred percent mineral except it’s nine dollars for a little thing instead of two dollars at the grocery store so I did that and then beeswax on top I like the recessed wheels that turn really good thank you the drawer is nice
I could have built the drawer a little, bit better, to be honest, it’s kind of a cheap way of doing that but it works so.she was going to go to Pottery Barn she wasn’t gonna go there but she wanted one at Pottery Barn for how much $700 and we spent how much 60 $60 well the butcher-block we found that would have been a little expensive but $60 and it’s done .
