Let’s Talk About Design – Bar Height Table
I guess anyway he wrote into me and said he was having trouble with a knot I guess an eating table I’m not quite a dining table kind of like a bar height. a tall table that he’s been working on so he sent it into me asked me if I’d help him out so let’s jump in there’s gonna be another one of those kinds of real-time ones like I did last time I thought that was fun so people seem to like it.
I thought we’d do it again anyway let’s jump into the drawing here. so here’s what he sent me kind of a little bit inspired by like the spider. or I don’t know if it’s inspired by but it’s similar to that spider table that I just built I don’t know if that maybe that’s the reason that he sent it into me maybe it made him think of it anyway. he asked for my opinion so the first thing that I noticed is that and this is something I’ve talked about before there are no stretchers so I always look funny to me when you see the kind of legs just coming straight out of the top.
other than that it looks like the angle is probably a little bit too steep it’s. probably kind of slanted in too much. this angle right here should be a little bit closer to vertical I think and I’m going to probably make the I’m guessing. I’m going to probably make the taper a little bit less aggressive too so just kind of make the whole thing more subtle. let’s just start drawing and see what happened so I’m just going to create a piece that’s the same size as his top.
it looks like it’s thirty six-inch square and an inch and a half thick so we’ll just stick with those dimensions, for now, that seems like a reasonable. the place to start okay now we can start drawing this thing so what I like to do. when I’m making legs that are going to be at an angle you know running diagonally across the piece like this is.
I make myself kind of like a little cheater piece so what I’m going to do is. I’m just going to draw the angle goes down to the ground. this kind of okay I’m going to have to do something weird with a sketch of here. because I don’t have my escape button because I’m recording on my screen.
currently and that takes away the escape button apparently so I’m gonna have to do some weird clicks but anyway that’s. all fine and dandy so I’m going to make a component out of this and then I’m going to use this to kind of just draw. my leg in two dimensions and right now we’re not going to worry about joinery or anything like that this is just going to purely be aesthetic so you don’t want your legs to be all the way at the corner because then you would well by the time you give them some depth they would actually stick out past the tabletop and there’d be a real toe catcher so we’re just going to go in I’m just going to guess about four inches.
that’s a good starting place just do the same thing on the other side a lot of this stuff in this stage of the game is really just kind of guessing you know you just kind of you get better at guessing as you’ve done it more and more. but it’s still guessing and you kind of have to just take a look at the piece and get your thoughts once it’s coming together and you know you can refine from there. but for the angle so first I’m going to see what angle he used it looks like he used about 11 degrees, yeah I really like that escape button and I don’t ever realize.
how much I use it until I don’t have it any all right well I’m not going to go that much I’m going to do it real stud I’m just going to go like 5 degrees. let’s just start off with that and see how that works and then I will make my piece oh wait to hang on today, okay so I’m going to guess probably about 4 inches at the top here at the bottom we’re going to go one inch so let’s just see.
what this angle looks like so we’re basically going from one inch wide at the bottom to four inches at the top you can already tell that’s a lot more. subtle than what he has I think that looks pretty good let’s start with that and see how it comes out so I’m just going to replicate an exact same thing. over here you could actually do this a lot quicker than I’m doing it by just doing one of them and then mirroring it.
over but I like to draw what can I say right so there we have that now we have to get a stretcher because I really think that that piece is missing a stretcher so I’m going to say probably about three inches let’s try that I think that looks pretty good I usually like it to be a little bit narrower of a piece than the leg is anyway let’s draw. that in now let’s just erase all of our extra lines that we got going on here.
and then we can well we have to give it. some dimension to really tell so let’s just say that we’re going to make these. out of pieces that are an inch and a half wide also so I’m just going to do 3/4 of an inch that way three-quarters of an inch this way so far I’m liking it enough. that I’m going to stick with it for now. so I’m just going to duplicate this. a piece so I’ll just copy it over okay.
if I’m liking it now I’m afraid because these things get taller and taller and this leg gets longer and longer the more. prone it is to wobble so I’m going to throw a like a mid mid-height stretcher. in there as well just to just see what. it’s like see if we like the way it looks so I’m going to go down about let’s see if the whole thing is 40 I’m gonna go down let’s say 16 inches there.
18 inches that feel rightish to me and this one’s going to be thinner I’m gonna go two inches here and then I’m going to connect the dots lalalala hear that give this thing the same thickness again. we’re not concerned about joinery at this point let’s just uh just that it looks a little more like a finished.
the thing let’s just make these into miters. so it doesn’t look so monolithic that kind of help to see what it’s looking like okay so far I mean I definitely. think it’s it’s looking better so far. now let’s do the top let’s see what angle he’s on the top. also like about 21 inches I’m gonna go. I’m just going to match that five the five degrees might be a little too. subtle but I’m going to try it but the other thing I’m going to do first is I’m actually I’m not going to have it. bevel go all the way to the top and make that sharp corn I’m going to give it a little flat spot so I’m just going to copy this line down about a half an inch.
let’s try that and then I’m going to try that 5 degrees and just see how we like that so I’m just going to kind of a weird way that I do this but works for me just make myself like a little blank. there and then get my protractor tool and I’m just going to go in 5 degrees. then I can get rid of that piece then if I look on the underside of the table. here and I offset it until it just until. it kisses that line that I just made now. I know I’ll have that five-degree angle. going all around once I just connect these dots so basically just take this corner and go to that corner just do that all the way around the piece and now we can erase all the insiders and hopefully you guys.
can’t hear that there’s some like crazy loud car driving around a muscle car. alright, let’s see where we’re at so far. so I’m just gonna take a view from the front let’s get outta more so you can also use this eye tool so what do you think the average person’s eye height. I’d say that the average person is five-seven so their eyes would be like five. three something like that. so what’s out 63 inches so what’s uh so this is about the average person’s eye. height so I think adding that stretcher definitely makes it look better actually kind of like the crossbar down there and I think it will give it a little bit more structure perhaps I don’t know I’m not an engineer anyway yeah I like this.
I think this is not aggressive enough I want to go back in and make this a little bit more aggressive so I’m just going to undo back to this point and then let’s try I think this part really does need to be more aggressive to be noticed. let’s try 15 let’s see how that works and then none if this isn’t good maybe. we split the difference into ten can erase that again offset until it just kisses that guy connect the dots getting dark while I’m doing this hopefully I’m not in pitch and pitch-black now if I am just going to only show the computer screen just got worried for a second.
that I wasn’t screen recording for some reason but I am that’s why I can’t push. my skate button through all right let’s. let’s see where we’re at now the top is still pretty subtle but I think. it’s a type of thing that’ll be noticeable in real life especially when you’re at it so I’m not going to go any crazier than that if you like it crazier. you can easily change that but just looking at the overall piece I definitely like the direction that we’re at now a little bit better than where we were before here we can kind of just add these lines in just. that kind of finish the effect a little. a bit more yeah I’m happier with this you. could easily leave it right here make any adjustments
I think you have a pretty close to a finished piece that’s. good enough just to kind of see what adding that stretcher do your know-how. just I think it’s kind of similar to other let’s talk about designs that I’ve done but I think if anything this just. shows how few little tweaks can make quite a bit of difference I mean it’s really just slight alterations to this angle slide all the way to alterations. to the top adding a stretcher you could really take or leave this part and on what do you guys think you like it. better with or without I like it with on. such a tall table no no I don’t like. those kind things I think this actually balances it a little bit it gives the lower part a little bit more weight and more visually and I think it just kind of balances the design any way I’ll leave it there hopefully enjoy this episode and I’ll see you next time.
