Let's Talk About Design - Bar Height Table
I guess anyway he wrote into me and said he was having trouble using a knot I figure an eating table I am not really a dining table kind of like a bar elevation. The tall table he's been working on so he mailed it into me asked me if I'd help him out so let us jump in there is gonna be another one of these sorts of real-time ones like I did last time that I believed that was entertaining so people appear to like it.
I thought we would do it again anyway let's leap in the drawing here. So here is what he sent me kind of a little bit inspired by like the spider. I don't know if it's inspired by but it's comparable to this spider desk that I just constructed I do not know if that perhaps that is why that he sent it into me perhaps it made me think about it anyhow. He asked for my opinion so the first thing I noticed is that and this is something I've talked about before there are no stretchers so that I always seem funny to me when you find the kind of legs just coming straight out of the top.
Other than that it appears like the angle is probably a tiny bit too steep it is. Probably kind of slanted in too much. This angle here should be a little bit closer to vertical I think and I am going to likely make the I am guessing. Let's just begin drawing and see what happened so I am just going to make a piece that is the same size as his shirt.
A place to begin okay now we could start drawing on this item what I like to do. When I am making legs that are going to be in an angle you understand running diagonally across the piece in this way is.
I make myself sort of like a tiny cheater bit so what I'm going to do is. I am just going to draw the angle move down to the ground. This kind of okay I's going to have to do something odd with a sketch of this. Because I don't have my escape button because I am recording on my display.
Now and that takes away the escape button so I'm gonna have to do some weird clicks but anyhow that is. All fine and dandy so I'm likely to make a part out of this and then I will use this to kind of just draw. My leg in 2 dimensions and right now we are not going to worry about joinery or something like that this is merely going to purely be aesthetic so you do not want your legs to be all the way at the corner since then you'd well by the time you provide them some depth they would really stick out past the tabletop and there'd be a true toe catcher so we are just going to go in I'm just going to guess about four inches.
That is a great starting place just do the exact same thing on the other side a lot of this stuff in this phase of the game is actually just kind of imagining you understand your kind of you get better at imagining as you have done it more and more. But it's still imagining and you kind of need to just take a look at the item and get your ideas once it's coming together and you also know you can refine from there. But for the angle so first I will find out what angle he utilized it appears like he used about 11 degrees, yeah I really like that escape button and I do not ever understand.
How much I use it before I do not have it right well I am not likely to go that far I am going to do it actual stud I am just going to go like 5 degrees. Let's just start off with that and see how that works and then I will make my piece oh wait to hang on today, okay so I'm going to guess probably about 4 inches at the top here at the base we're going to go one inch so let us just watch.
What this angle looks like so we're essentially going from one inch wide at the base to four inches at the top you can already tell that is far more. Subtle than what he has I think that looks pretty good let us begin with this and see how it comes out so I'm going to replicate an exact same thing. Over here you could really do this a lot quicker than I am doing it by simply doing one of them and then mirroring it.
Over but I love to draw what can I say so that we now have that today we have to acquire a stretcher because I truly feel that piece is missing a stretcher so I will say probably about three inches let us try I think that seems pretty good I usually like it for a bit narrower of a bit than the leg is anyhow let's draw. That in now let us just erase all of our extra lines we have going on here.
And we can well we must give it. Some dimension to really tell so let us just say that we're likely to make these. From pieces that are an inch and a half wide too so, I am just going to do 3/4 of an inch that manner three-quarters of an inch this way so far I'm liking it enough. Which I'm going to stick with it for the time being. So I am only going to replicate this. Bit so I'll just copy it over okay.
Prone it's to twist so I'm going to throw a just like a mid-height stretcher. In there as well just to see what. It is like see when we enjoy how it seems so I'm going to go down about let us see if the whole issue is 40 I am gonna go down let us say 16 inches there.
18 inches which feel appropriate ish to me personally and this one's going to be thinner I am gonna go two inches here and then I will connect the dots lalalala hear that give this thing the same thickness again. We are not worried about joinery at this point let us just uh just that it looks somewhat more like a completed.
The thing let us just make these into miters. Think that it's it is looking better so much better. Now let us do the top let's see what angle he's on the very top. Also like about 21 inches I'm gonna go. I am only going to match that five the five levels might be a little too. Subtle but I will try it but another thing I am going to do is I'm really I'm not going to have it I'm not going to possess it. Bevel go all the way to the top and make that crispy corn I'm going to give it a little flat spot so I'm going to copy down this line about a half-inch.
Let's try that and then I'm going to try that 5 degrees and see how we like that I'm just going to sort of a bizarre way I do this but works for me just make myself enjoy a small blank. There and then get my protractor instrument and I'm just going to move in 5 amounts. Then I can get rid of that piece then should I appear on the underside of the table. I offset it just until. It kisses online that I simply made now. Going all around once I just join these dots so essentially take this corner and proceed to this corner just do that all the way around the piece and now we could erase all the insiders and ideally you guys.
Can't hear that there is some like mad loud automobile driving about a muscle car. Alright, let's see where we are at up to now. So I'm just gonna have a look from the frontlet us get outta more so you can also utilize this eye tool so what do you think the average man's eye height. I'd say that the normal man is five-seven so their eyes will be similar to five. Three something like that. So what is out 63 inches so what's uh so this is about the average man's eye. Height so I think to add that stretcher certainly makes it seem much better really sort of like the crossbar down there and I think it will give it a tiny bit more structure perhaps I do not know I'm not an engineer anyway I like this.
I believe this is not competitive enough I want to return in and make this a little bit more competitive so I'm going to undo back to this point and then let's try I feel this component really does have to be aggressive to be observed. Let's try 15 let's see how that works and then none if that isn't good maybe. We split the difference into ten may erase that offset until it just kisses that man connect the dots becoming dark while I am doing this hopefully I'm not at all pitch and pitch-black now if I am just going to just show the monitor only got worried for a second.
That I wasn't screen recording for some reason but I am that's why I can not push. My skate button through all right let us. Let us see where we're at now the very best remains fairly subtle but I presume. It is a kind of thing that will be noticeable in real life especially when you're at it so I'm not going to go any crazier than that if you like it crazier. It's possible to easily change that but just taking a look at the general piece I definitely like the path that we are at now a small bit better than where we were before here we can sort of just add these lines inside only. That sort of complete the effect a bit. Little more yeah I am more happy with this you. Could easily make it right here make any alterations
I believe you have a pretty near finished piece that is. Good enough just to sort of see what adding that stretcher does your know-how. Shows how few small tweaks can make quite a lot of gap I mean it's really only small alterations for this angle slide all the way to alterations. To the top adding a stretcher you could really take or leave this part and on what do you men think you like it. Better without I enjoy it. This type of tall table no I don't like. Those type things I feel this really balances it a little bit it provides the lower portion a bit more fat and more visually and I think it just kind of balances that the design any way I will leave it hopefully enjoy this leave it there hopefully enjoy this episode and I'll see you next time.
