Let’s Talk About Design – Bar Height Table
I guess anyway he wrote into me and said he was having difficulty using a knot I figure that an eating table I’m not quite a dining table kind of like a bar height. The tall table he’s been working on so he mailed it into me asked me if I would help him out so let us jump in there’s gonna be the next one of these sort of real-time ones just like I did last time that I thought that was entertaining so people seem to like it.
I thought we’d do it anyway let us jump in the drawing. I do not know if it is inspired by but it’s comparable to this spider table I just built I do not know if that maybe that is the reason that he sent it into me perhaps it made me think about it anyway. He asked for my view so that the first thing that I noticed is that and this is something I have talked about before there are no stretchers so that I constantly seem funny to me when you see the sort of legs just coming straight out of the top.
Other than that it appears like the angle is most likely just a little bit too steep it is. Probably type of slanted in too much. This angle right here needs to be a tiny bit closer to vertical I believe and I’m going to probably make the I’m guessing. Let us just start drawing and determine what happened so I am just going to make a piece that’s the exact same size as his top.
A place to start okay now we could start drawing on this thing what I’d like to do. When I’m making legs which are likely to be at an angle you know running diagonally across the piece in this way is.
I make myself kind of like a tiny cheater piece so what I’m going to do is. I am going to draw on the angle go down to the ground. This kind of okay I will have to do something weird with a sketch of here. Because I don’t have my escape button since I am recording on my screen.
Currently and that takes away the escape button apparently so I am gonna need to do some bizarre clicks but anyway that is. All fine and dandy so I’m likely to make a component from this and then I will use this to kind of just draw. My leg in 2 dimensions and now we’re not going to worry about joinery or something like that this is merely going to only be aesthetic so you don’t need your legs to be all the way in the corner because then you’d nicely by the time you provide them some depth they’d actually stick out beyond the tabletop and there’d be a true toe catcher so we are just going to move in I am just going to guess about four inches.
That’s a great beginning place just do the same thing on the other side lots of this stuff inside this phase of the game is actually just kind of guessing you understand you kind of you get better at guessing as you have done it more and more. Nonetheless, it’s still imagining and you kind of have to just have a look at the item and get your ideas after it is coming together and you also know you can refine from there. But for the angle first I’m going to see what angle he used it looks like he employed about 11 degrees yeah I actually enjoy that escape button and I don’t ever understand.
Just how much I use it until I have it no all right well I’m not likely to go that far I’m going to do it actual stud I’m just going to go like 5 degrees. Let us just start off with that and see how that works and I will make my slice oh wait to hang on today, okay so I’m going to guess probably about 4 inches at the top here in the bottom we’re going to go 1 inch so let us just see.
What this angle looks like so we are essentially going from one inch wide at the bottom to four inches at the top you can already tell that’s far longer. Subtle than that which he’s I think that seems pretty good let us start with this and see how it comes out so I’m going to replicate exactly the exact same thing. Over here you can actually do this a whole lot faster than I am doing it by just doing one of them and then mirroring it.
Over but I love to draw what can I say so there we have that today we must acquire a stretcher because I truly think that that piece is missing a stretcher so I will say probably about three inches let us try that I think that seems pretty good I typically like it to be a bit narrower of a bit than the leg is anyway let us draw. That in now let us just erase all of our additional lines we have going on here.
And we can well we have to give it. Some dimension to actually tell so let’s just say that we’re likely to make them. Out of bits which are an inch and a half broad too so I am going to perform 3/4 of an inch that manner three-quarters of an inch that way so far I’m liking it I am liking it enough. Which I’m likely to stay with it for now. So I am only going to replicate this. A piece so that I’ll just copy it over okay.
Prone it is to wobble so I’m going to throw a like a mid-height stretcher. In there as well just to just see what. It is like see when we like how it looks so I’m likely to return about let’s see if the entire issue is 40 I’m gonna return let’s say 16 inches there.
18 inches which feel rightish to me and this one’s likely to be thinner I’m got move two inches here and then I will connect the dots lalalala hear that offer this item the same thickness again. We are not worried about joinery at this stage let’s just uh just it looks somewhat more like a finished.
The thing let’s just make these into miters. Think that it’s it is looking better so much better. Also, like about 21 inches I am going go. I am only going to match which five the five levels might be a bit too. Subtle but I’m going to try it but another thing I am going to do is I am really I’m not likely to have it I am not going to possess it. Bevel go all the way to the top and make that crispy corn I’m going to give it a little flat spot so I’m just going to copy down this line about a half an inch.
Let’s try that and then I will try that 5 degrees and see how we enjoy that so I’m just going to kind of a weird way that I do so but works for me just make myself enjoy a small blank. There and get my protractor instrument and I am going to go in 5 amounts. Then I can eliminate this piece then if I appear on the underside of the table. I offset it until it just until. It kisses online I simply made now. I know I’ll have that five-degree angle. Going all around once I simply connect these dots so essentially take this corner and go to this corner just do that all the way around the piece and we could erase all of the insiders and ideally you guys.
Can not hear that there’s some like mad loud car driving about a muscle car. Okay, let us see where we are at up to now. So I am just gonna take a view from the frontlet we get outta more so you can also use this eye tool so what do you believe the average person’s eye height. I would say that the average man is five-seven so their eyes would be like five. Three something like this. So what is out 63 inches so what’s uh so that is about the average person’s eye. Height, therefore I think to add this stretcher certainly makes it seem better really kind of like the crossbar down and I think that it will give it a tiny bit more structure maybe I do not know I am not an engineer anyway I like this.
I believe this is not competitive enough I wish to go back in and make this a little bit more aggressive so I’m going to undo back to this stage and then let’s try I think this part does have to be more aggressive to be observed. Let us try 15 let us see how that works and then none if that is not good maybe. We split the difference into ten can erase that offset until it only cries that man connect the dots getting dark while I am doing so hopefully I’m not in pitch and pitch-black today if I am just going to only show the computer screen only got worried for a moment.
I was not display recording for some reason but I’m that’s why I can’t push. My mouse through all right let’s. Let us see where we are at now the very best remains pretty subtle but I presume. It is a type of thing that’ll be evident in real life particularly when you’re at it so I’m not going to go any crazier than that if you like it crazier. It’s possible to easily change that but only looking at the overall piece I definitely like the direction that we’re at now a small bit better than where we had been earlier here we can kind of just add these lines inside just. That sort of complete the effect a little. Little more yeah I’m more happy with this you. Could easily make it make any adjustments
I believe you have a fairly near-finished piece that is. Good enough to kind of see what adding that stretcher will one understand how. Reveals how few little tweaks can make quite a lot of gap I mean it is really just slight alterations for the angled slide all the way to adjustments. To the top including a stretcher you could take or leave that component and on what do you guys think you like it. Better with or without I enjoy it with on. This type of tall table no no I do not like. Those kind things I think this really balances it a tiny bit it gives the lower portion a bit more fat and more visually and I think that it only kind of balances the design anyhow I will leave it there hopefully enjoy this leave it hopefully enjoy this episode and I will see you next time.
