Kitchen Island On Wheels

How to Build a Kitchen Island on Wheels

In this article i will show how to build a kitchen island on wheels. we’ve boiled it down to three basic. steps plan it shop it and build it in step one we developed a design that entails four exposed legs with two open shelves the dimensions we came up with were 38 inches long 24 inches wide and 38 inches high we decided to extend the countertop.

So it would overhang by approximately 16 inches on one end so we could accommodate a couple of barstools. once we had our design finished we worked up a materialist so we could go shopping got our 4×4 posts for our four corners .

We’ve got our Castor’s or wheels. here because we want our cart to roll around the hardware bolts. we’ve got our top a pre glued up slab and we’ve got our rails and we’ve got a piece of black. melamine what we’re gonna use for our shelving .

Okay we’re ready to start.

Step three build it we’re getting ready to cut our four legs our four by four posts our total cabinet height is 38 inches and we’re going to subtract one inch for the thickness of our top. subtracting three and three-quarter for our forecasters or wheels and that leaves us with a 33 and one-quarter inch.

Length for our posts ready to cut our 1 by 6 down into 1 by 3’s those will be our support rails for us to support our two shelves and it also makes the frame that’s going to lock the four legs.

We’ve just got done cutting our horizontal rails for our width and our length and we’re just gonna run them. through a router table to round over the edge a little bit you can either do this with a handheld router you could break.

The edge with a sanding block or we’re gonna run ours through on our table. we’re in the process of laying out our carriage bolts and where they’re gonna come through and connect our horizontal rails and if we Center down the post you can see that it’s not going to grab a whole lot of the horizontal rails the one by threes so we’re gonna eliminate the carriage bolts and we’re actually going to switch over to just a regular. wood screw coming from the inside .

we’ll just attach the rails the 1 by 3’s to the post with a wood screw we’re just. assembling the horizontal frames putting the rails together screwing them at the corners pre-drill the countersink and put in a screw and our rolling cart.

We’re using for our two shelves some black melamine what you have here .so, we’re getting ready to cut that to size but as another option you can always use individual wood boards for your shelves as to if you don’t have the capability. to cut thick sheets .

Whenever you cut melamine or plywood on your table saw you typically have chip out on the bottom side of your sheet goods so one trick to remedy that chip. out as you can see right here.

You having some microchip out on the bottom side we’re going to run it through our router table here using it kind of as a jointer we’re going to take off a micro edge.

We’re getting ready to cut out the two shelves that are gonna slip between the four corner post we’ve put pieces together we’re going to cut two at a time using our jigsaw with a fine-toothed blade.

We’re starting to assemble the frames the three frames to the four legs and we have this unit upside down basically. this is our top frame and we’ll do a shelf and frame and shelf and frame .

We’re working on our middle frame which is our first shelf and so we get even spacing all the way around we’ve cut these little spacer blocks you put one at each corner and they’ll give us the same distance off of our top frame .

We just finished installing our three frames onto our four legs and since the unit is upside down .we’re now getting ready to install our wheels or casters. we’ve purchased two with locks on them and two without but all four are swivel you can pick and choose as you desire.

We’ve got our cart assembled we’ve got our wheels and casters on now we’re just ready to put some trim pieces on the edges of our shelves and so we have an exposed particle board here so we’re just taking some pine strips we’re going to glue them and nail them and then that will give us a nice finished edge to our shelf.

Okay we’re on our last step of building and we’ve got the unit again upside down. we’re ready to attach our frame unit the legs to our top conventional way of doing that would be to drill a hole through your apron and insert a screw. through there but we have a second option and that’s to use this tabletop.

Fastener it slips inside of a groove in the apron that we’ve made previous on the table saw and then you put one screw going down to that hole there and what that allows is for the your tabletop to expand and contract since this is a solid wood top you have to allow that movement of contraction and expansion
